Supported Elements
Oxygen
Note: Oxygen determination can only be performed on purely organic samples. Inorganics attack the platinized carbon catalyst and significantly reduce its effectiveness and may yield erroneous results. In addition, phosphorous and some inorganics form oxides that can not be pyrolized under the analytical conditions.

Method Summary
The Perkin-Elmer 2400 Elemental Analyzer is fitted with an oxygen accessory kit to determine oxygen in organic materials. The analyzer uses pyrolysis to convert the oxygen to carbon monoxide. The carbon monoxide is then separated from the other pyrolozates under steady state conditions, and measured as a function of thermal conductivity. The instrument is calibrated prior to sample analysis with an NIST traceable organic standard. System suitability is confirmed by analyzing an NIST traceable organic standard. The standard must check to within + 0.3% of its theoretical value. All sample analyses are bracketed with a standard that must be within + 0.3% of its theoretical value.
